I AM WAITING (1957; d. Koreyoshi Kurahara).
So quiet, yet beneath the placid surfaces, raw emotions strain to burst free. Restaurant owner Yujiro Ishihara (Crazed Fruit) appears to be a supporting player around whom the mysterious stranger Mie Kitahara whirls. But that’s not how things work out, as the stranger settles into her new surroundings and her past — and that of the restaurant manager — converge in a present that is fraught with danger. Beautifully underplayed and masterfully staged.
